No new cases of polio in last two years: Collector

Polio drops were administered to the children in the target age group (0–5 years) during the second round of Pulse Polio Immunisation (PPI) held at various places in the city and district on Sunday.

District Collector N. Yuvaraj formally launched the programme at China Waltair Dispensary by administering polio drops to a few children. He said that no new cases of polio were reported from anywhere in the district during the last two years. A total of 4.38 lakh children below 5 years of age were administered polio drops in the first phase, achieving cent per cent target in the district.

A total 3,632 PPI centres were set up in the district and 7,033 mobile teams formed to undertake door-to-door surveys. An additional 14,528 persons were appointed and 98 mobile vaccination teams were also formed to administer drops to uncovered children in the target age group.

State Nodal Officer for PPI and Joint Director of Urban Health Mission Aruna Devi said that special teams were posted at bus terminals, railway stations and junctions to administer polio drops to children on the move. A total of 363 supervisors were appointed and cold storage chains were set up at 87 places to prevent the vaccine from getting damaged.

District Immunisation Officer Vijayalakshmi, GVMC Chief Medical Officer Satyanarayana Raju and Senior Medical Officer Sanjeev Kumar were present.

Minister for Panchayat Raj Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu launched the programme at Narsipatnam in the district. He recalled that scores of people in the country used to suffer from polio in the past. The Medical and Health Department in association with NGOs and the public had taken up polio eradication as a mission and freed the nation from it.

The government was continuing the PPI programme to prevent recurrence of the disease in future.

The Minister’s wife Chintakayala Padmavathi and MPP S. Ramanamma also administered drops to children.

District Medical and Health Officer J. Sarojini and Additional DMHO P. Sujata were present.

Rotary camps

Some 3,000 children were administered polio drops at different camps in the city under the auspices of Rotary Visakha Port City. Seven camps were organised at Nakkavanipalem, KRM Colony, Sitammapeta, Maduranagar, Maddilapalem, Rasavapupalem, TPT Colony.

The first camp was inaugurated by past district Governor of Rotary District 3020 Ch. Surya Rao. The Rotary club took up a campaign by setting up hoardings, posters and billboards at different places with a view to creating awareness among the people.

At CFI



A pulse polio camp, organised by Child Foundation of India, was inaugurated by physician Kutikuppala Surya Rao at Kancharapalem. Polio drops were administered to over 200 children.
