Part of knife removed from man’s head

Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) removed a length of steel knife from a man’s head. It had pierced through the skull and penetrated 6 cms into the left side of the brain, creating a type of clot.

Hospital Dean S. Revwathy told journalists here on Thursday that the surgery began within two hours of a GVK-EMRI 108 ambulance bringing him to CMCH from Tirupur Government hospital around 4.30 a.m. on January 1.

Following the three-hour craniotomy performed by neurosurgeon S. Balamurugan with the assistance of anaesthetist K. Satish Kumar, the piece was removed. He has now completely recovered and was discharged on Wednesday.

R. Raju, Head, Neurosurgery Department, said that the patient was lucky that the knife piece did not damage any vital parts of the brain.
